Abandon Blog Tour & Giveaway: Meg Cabot on Inspirations & Influences

Welcome fellow mortals to the first official stop on Meg Cabot’s Abandon Blog Tour! In celebration of the release of the first book in a brand new trilogy, we are thrilled to have the lovely Meg Cabot over to talk about her inspirations & influences for this dark, paranormal retelling of a classic Greek myth.

Please give a warm welcome to Meg Cabot!

One of the first things readers ask when they meet an author whose book they’ve loved is, “Where on earth did you get the idea for this book?”

The truth is, authors kind of hate this question, because sometimes they don’t remember (one author I asked didn’t even remember the book. Thanks, Author Who Shall Be Nameless).

But with my new book Abandon, the answer is easy. Abandon was partly inspired by the myth of Persephone, one of the only Greek myths where the heroine doesn’t get turned into a tree, or an animal, or a flower . . . .

Instead, she ends up goddess of the dead, Queen of the Underworld!

I’ve always loved this myth because I didn’t exactly feel like I fit in at school. I wasn’t into sports and sometimes had problems paying attention in class. Because of that, I didn’t always get the best of grades. I thought maybe I was in the wrong place . . . or the wrong millennia.

So when I stumbled across Edith Hamilton’s book Mythology, and the myth of Persephone, and learned how her mom kept her away from Olympus, thinking it would “protect her”—with tragic results—something clicked. I couldn’t get the story out of my mind. (In fact, I failed Algebra twice partly because I kept drawing scenes from the myth in my Algebra notebooks! You can see them on my photo album on the Abandon Facebook page.)

There was something incredibly compelling to me not only about Persephone’s rise to Queen of the Underworld but about the love story between her and Hades . . . possibly because they were two people who both felt like outsiders, rejected by everyone else for being different. Hades was so in love with Persephone, he was even willing to allow the earth’s entire population to starve rather than give her up.

As a teenager, I was always longing to find that one special person who would not only completely love and understand me for who I was, but come and take me away to a place where I would fit in and finally find my purpose in life.

The heroine of Abandon, Pierce, feels as if she doesn’t fit in at her new school as well, mostly because, like Persephone, Pierce has been to the Underworld. Only no one will believe her. Everyone thinks she’s crazy. Pierce is starting to think so, too.

Especially because someone she met while she was in the Underworld—a mysterious guy named John Hayden—doesn’t seem to want to let her go now that she’s back amongst the living. Pierce is drawn to him in a way she can’t explain . . . and maybe can’t even admit to herself.

Myths are traditional stories that were created to explain a natural or social phenomenon in the time before science. The myth of Persephone explains the origin of spring . . . but it’s a story that’s also shrouded in death. In Abandon, Pierce is a teenager torn between the challenges of being alive—dealing with being the “new freak in school,” her parents’ divorce drama, the mounting danger that seems to follow her everywhere she goes—and the idea that she can escape to the Underworld, this seemingly peaceful place, ruled by this incredibly mysterious, sexy guy.

Which will Pierce choose? You’ll have to read Abandon to find out!

About the Book:

Seventeen-year-old Pierce Oliviera knows what happens to us when we die. That’s how she met John Hayden, the mysterious stranger who’s made returning to normal life—or at least life as Pierce knew it before the accident—next to impossible. Though she thought she escaped him—starting a new school in a whole new place—it turns out she was wrong. He finds her. What does John want from her? Pierce thinks she knows…just like she knows he’s no guardian angel, and his dark world isn’t exactly heaven. But she can’t stay away from him, either, especially since he’s always there when she least expects it, but exactly when she needs him most. But if she let’s herself fall any further, she might find herself back in the place she fears most. And when Pierce discovers the shocking truth, that’s exactly where John sweeps her: The Underworld.

I always liked “Pandora’s Box” as a child, though was confused by the different, contradictory versions.

My favourite Greek myth would be the one about Hades and Persephone. It’s so much like The Beauty and The Beast and I’m a sucker for fairy tales.

My favourite myth is the myth about Hermes when he was a baby. If I remember correctly, he went right out of his crib and invented the lyre, then later stole Apollo’s cattle and walked them backwards somewhere and cooked them or something, which is a huge offence to Apollo because he was always kind of obsessed with his cows. Then, he goes back to his crib like nothing happened! Apollo talks to some old man who says he saw a baby walking with his cows backwards, and Apollo thinks it’s Hermes, so he goes to him and Hermes just pretends like he’s the average baby and tricks him. Every time I think of it I laugh. I think afterwards they became friends when Hermes bettered Apollo at the lyre, earning himself Apollo’s respect. Oh, Hermes, you funny, funny god.

My favorite myth is Legend of the White Snake. I find the myth so sad and moving; the snake demon and the human are in love, yet a monk believes that she’s evil and traps her in Leifeng Pagoda.

I’ve always loved the legend of Psyche, its just so romantic and I’m a helpless sucker for that kind of girly thing. If I recall correctly, she (while on a quest to regain her true love) gets some help from Persophone as well.

My favorite myth might just have to be the story of Orpheus and Eurydice.

  • Chloe B

MY name (Chloe) is the name of the mother of Persephone, so the myth tells it. My favourite is the story about Chloe and Persephone, and how Chloe could only see Persephone when springtime came, and that is why we have the seasons – when it is winter, Chloe is miserable. When she can see Persephone – it is spring, Chloe is happy. I think that’s how it goes, anyway! 😀

    Thanks for the chance!

I have several favorite Greek myths (Hades & Persephone being one of them). I think my favorite is a tie between Psyche and the Orpheus and Eurydice myth. Pandora’s Box is good, too, but I seem partial to the dark/tragic love myths.

My favorite myth is that of Athena’s birth because it’s so ridiculous. I love it.

My favorite Indian myth is that of Vishnu as Vamana. Vishnu disguises himself as a short Brahman and requests that the King give him three steps-worth of land. Since he’s a tiny little thing, the King promises this to him and then Vishnu shoots up to giant size and with three steps takes over the heavens, the earth, and the underworld. He also steps on the King’s head but he gives him immortality at least!

Also, I don’t know that I have a favorite Greek myth but as a kid we had this game called By Jove which was based on Greek mythology and I absolutely loved it – going to Hades was like the Monopoly jail though – not fun.

I’ve always loved the myth of Psyche and Eros – she questions and quests and achieves what she desires most, both love and acceptance into a family. Sure, that family may be the gods of Olympus, but I think her story is both inspiring and relatable. Persephone is a favorite as well and I can’t wait to read Abandon! 🙂

My favorite has to be Orpheus and Eurydice. It’s sweet and tragic without all the melodrama of some of the other myths. Plus I just like her name: Eurydice.

I’ve never read a meg cabot book either. But my favorite myth is the one in Mary Stewart’s The Moon Spinners. It’s a variation on the fates I think. 3 sisters spin the moon down out of the sky every month making the night safe for small hunted things and when they go down to the water to wash their wool, the moon forms in the sky again.

I’ve always been fascinated by the Medusa lore. Two versions of the lore, the first was that she was one of three sister-monsters (hated by mankind) and the other that she was a priestess of Athena, beautiful to a fault, raped by Poseidon, then blamed and punished by Athena (go figure).

I loooooove Greek mythology; I took a class on it my senior year that was completely unnecessary for graduating in order to learn more about it. D’aulaire’s Book of Mythology was pretty much my favorite book as a child, and I always liked the Perseus myth in that one. My favorite overall myth is probably Cupid and Psyche. Good love story with an unusually happy ending.

I’ve always found the myth about Icarus to be an interesting one. Much to be learned from this myth of not listening. In this case, flying to close to the sun with wings that could melt away.

oh wow, i used to love greek myths more than anything. (like lots of us, it seems!) though personally, i never thought the hades/persephone story was at all romantic… i thought he was a monster for tricking her and forcing her to stay with him in the underworld.

i always really liked all the best heros, especially the perseus and theseus.

    April 26, 2011 at 1:41 pm

It seems like the Persephone myth is REALLY popular (and considering three or four YA releases are using it right now…that’s probably why), but I love the myth of Arachne. On thinking, it’s one that I’d love to adapt. Athena is such a complex Goddess because I’ve always loved her, but she can be so cruel about her talents. Plus the weaving and the connection to spiders equal parts intrigues me and tweaks me out.

I grew up listening to my Mom read Greek Myths aloud… my favorite was Cupid & Psyche. I love the tests and quests the heroine must go through, and the many moments during the story when you find yourself inwardly shouting at the characters for giving in to their temptations. Awesome story.

Ooh, talk about my favorite myth? Why certainly.

Mine’s the one about Ariadne, who was the King of Crete’s daughter and the sister of the Minotaur. She’s the one who helped Theseus find his way out of the labyrinth by smuggling him some string. The myth goes that Ariadne escapes with Theseus from Crete, and on the Island of Naxos he sleeps with her, and then while she’s asleep in the tent he and his crew take off and abandon her. She wakes up, find they’re gone, and curses Theseus. Theseus then subsequently forgets to change the sails on his ship and his father jumps off a cliff.

Meanwhile, Ariadne is discovered by Dionysus, god of wine and merriment (and who was gorgeous even by Greek Myth standards) and he marries her and makes her his consort. Upgrade!

I’ve been fasinated by Geek and Roman myths since I was little. I read Edith Hamiltons Mythology in high school and fell in love all over again. I love the every story I’ve ever read. The gods were so petty and vain. One of my favorite books was based on the Trojan war. The Firebrand by Marion Zimmer Bradley but it was told from the point of view of Paris’s twin sister Cassandra. She was given the gift of prophecy by one god but the curse of having no one believe her by another god. A perfect Greek tragedy.

I can’t wait to read this book and add it to my collection.

I tended to find that most myths I ran across didn’t end up so well for the girls in them. So I started writing alternate versions in my heads, and now I have all these non-canon stories in my head that make me go “Oh, I love the Medusa myth,” and then leads people to stare at me and go “you WHAT?” It’s good times.

But if we go back to the original, I like every version of Cupid and Psyche that I’ve read other than Bullfinch’s, so that’s probably my favorite. 😀

When I was twelve or thirteen, my very favourite myth was “The Six Gifts” from the Norse canon. I used to hunt around for different retellings.

These days, I like anything to do with Dionysos. His stories aren’t very nice (they usually involve people being ripped to shreds), but they’re so interesting!

I have also always loved the story of Persephone and Hades, because it’s one of the few stories that actually ended well. You don’t hear stories of hate or infidelity like you do with the other gods and goddesses. And I always thought that Persephone kind of chose to be with him. I mean, she grew up as a goddess; her mother must have warned her never to eat or drink of the Underworld.
I also always loved the story of Eros and Psyche. Because it was one story where the girl was actually involved in what was going on instead of just waiting to see what happened.

  • Kira Gerrits

My favorite myth has to be Aphrodite’s birth. She was born of the sea, without any connection or obligation to anyone. 🙂

I don’t know very much about myths, but one that comes to mind is the story about Icarus. I remember reading the story in school and thinking it was interesting.

My favorite Greek myth is the nine muses. I love all kinds of art and history. Even though I can’t paint I love paintings and the stories behind them. My entire family from my mother’s side are all singers and musicians so it runs in the family my passion for music. Acting is another passion of mine that I’d like to pursed as a career. And when it comes to writing I can’t seem to put my pen and notebook down. I write music, lyrics, and even stories. I don’t know how but ideas just come to me out of nowhere and I just write it down and even if I don’t have my notebook around I grab my phone and write on my notepad. This is why the nine muses are my favorite Greek myth, they are the curators of the arts and the arts are the most wonderful things in the world! 🙂

My favourite Greek myth would be the one about Hades and Persephone. It’s so much like The Beauty and The Beast

Since it has been years since I have studied mythology, my most recent exposure being The Lost Hero, I have no idea what my favorite myth is. So, I looked up the definition of myth and decided to share a story I think fits: “The Devil went down to Georgia”. Legendary story? check; Hero? check (Johnny); Concerned with dieties? check (Satan aka Hades, god of the underworld); explain practice of nature? check (how to cheat death). Ok, that last one might be stretching it…

I’ve always been fascinated by Greek myths and I actually have a lot of favorites. I loved the myth of Theseus, Eros and Psyche and also Persephone and Hades, so I’m really excited for the book! 😀

Hmm… I always loved the one about Persephone and Hades because it is so romantic and it also explains the four seasons. I also liked the one about Athena and Arachne. It teaches you not to screw around with one of the most awesome godesses ever. 😀
