About the Novel

In a post-war, future world, where first contact has been made with intelligent life and humans are colonizing the stars, the nations of Earth have been united under a central government. Extrahumans, those possessing supernatural abilities such as flight and strength, are required by this government to belong to the Union, where they can be trained, monitored, and weaponized.

Michael Forward is cursed with the ability to see the future – every possible future – when he gazes into another person’s eyes. All he has ever wanted is to escape the grim destiny he sees when he looks in the mirror, but when he is tasked with a mission that will define the course of human history, Michael finds he cannot refuse. Now, he needs the help of a homeless ex-superhero to save a baby who may become the key to humanity’s freedom.

Broken figured she was done with heroics when she lost the ability to fly and escaped the confinement of the Extrahuman Union. But then the world started to fall apart around her, and a desperate teenage prophet with a baby entered her life, offering her the possibility of redemption and a chance to fly once more.

In a time of spreading darkness, when paranoia and oppression reign, can these unlikely allies preserve a small ray of hope for a better, brighter future?

A Word From Your Friendly Neighborhood Editors (and Book Smugglers)

We first discovered Susan Jane Bigelow’s work through Broken–originally, the novel was published in 2011 by indie press Candlemark and Gleam. We read the book and the series and fell in love with the world of the Extrahuman Union. Fast-forward to five years later, when we were approached by Susan to find a new home for her books, and publish the fourth and final novel in the series. We were thrilled and honored beyond belief to become the new publishers of The Extrahuman Union–a post-first-contact dystopian future in which superhumans are not only known and accepted quantities, but who are are cataloged, controlled, and tracked through the Union. Membership is mandatory.

This novel tells the story of a fallen superhero who has escaped the Union, and a young boy who can see the future–in these two characters’ hands lie the fate of not only Extrahumans, but quite possibly all human life.

Broken was our introduction to Susan Jane Bigelow’s writing and the world of the Extrahuman Union–we are so very happy to present this newly repackaged edition and share it with you, dear readers.

OMG I love it!!! So excited that you ladies are picking this series up, and when the time comes for #4 I’ll be all over it. Cover is gorgeous, though I have to say I thought Michael was black–but that could totally have been all in my head. In which case I suppose I’m proud of myself for mentally casting ethnic diversity unprompted? Not that SJB’s books lack in diversity, they’re knee deep in it.
