About the book:

Once upon a time, in a beautiful city famous for chocolate and protected by dragons, there was a girl so fearless that she dared to try to tell the greatest story of all: the truth.

Silke has always been good at spinning the truth and storytelling. So good that just years after arriving as a penniless orphan, she has found her way up to working for the most splendid chocolate makers in the city (oh, and becoming best friends with a dragon). Now her gift for weaving words has caught the eye of the royal family, who want to use her as a spy when the mysterious and dangerous fairy royals of Elfenwald announce they will visit the city. But Silke has her own dark, secret reasons for not trusting these visitors …

Can Silke find out the truth about the fairies while keeping her own secrets hidden?

A few words from Stephanie Burgis

When I first started writing The Dragon with a Chocolate Heart, I assumed it would be a standalone novel, because I knew that Aventurine (my fiery dragon-girl heroine) would complete her most life-defining story in that book. But what I wasn’t counting on at that point was Silke, the brilliant, fast-talking, clever-scheming, generous and curious best friend who slips smoothly into Aventurine’s life as soon as Aventurine reaches the city of Drachenburg, even though Aventurine has no interest in human friends.

Of course prickly dragon-girl Aventurine is soon won over by Silke. How could she not be? Anyone would be lucky to have Silke as a best friend…and by the end of that book, I knew I couldn’t let her go. I needed more time with Silke, I wanted to really get inside her head – and I knew Silke needed to star in a book of her own. She was far too smart and ambitious to be a sidekick! She had much bigger dreams for herself (and for the chocolate house), and I couldn’t wait to see her fulfill them.

I loved writing Silke’s own adventures (with her dragon-best friend at her side) as she becomes a spy in Drachenburg’s glittering royal palace, passes herself off as a lady-in-waiting to the grumpy younger princess, tells fabulous stories to visiting fairies and goblins, and sneaks through hidden passageways after dark to figure out the truth about the mysterious fairies’ secret plans…and about her own parents, whom she lost to the fairies long ago.

I’m so excited to finally get to share the US cover of The Girl with the Dragon Heart, again with fabulous cover art from Petur Antonsson. It shows Silke in her favorite kind of outfit, with Aventurine soaring high overhead. These two best friends may be very different from each other, but together, they are an unstoppable force – especially with a bit of enchanted chocolate on their side!
