Welcome to Smugglivus 2010: Day 18
Throughout this month, we will have daily guests – authors, bloggers and publishers alike – looking back at their favorite reads of 2010, and looking forward to events and upcoming books in 2011.
Who: Alice Morley (Assistant Manager – Brand and New Media Marketing) and Sara Zink (Publicist and Blogger Outreach) for Little, Brown US. They are here today to tell us about some of the titles coming this spring from LBYA plus a most awesome and generous ARC giveaway!
Please give it up for Alice and Sara!
I can’t believe a year has gone by since I wrote my last Smugglivus post. 2010 has been another great year for LBYR and thanks again to everyone for their support of our titles. It’s great when our books stimulate excitement and debate! My personal favorites in the past few months have been Cate Tiernan’s Immortal Beloved, with a fantastic, snarky immortal heroine who is running from her past. The DUFF by Kody Keplinger was a surprisingly (for me) sweet story with a positive message for teen girls (EVERYONE feels like a DUFF sometimes!) and I was also hooked by The Mockingbirds by Daisy Whitney, which handled the difficult subject of Date Rape in a fresh and empowering way. On a more personal note, my baby son was born in July of this year so I’ve also been reading a lot of The Very Hungry Caterpillar!
In 2011 we have a great new selection of titles – but I’ll leave that to my colleague Sara Zick, who from now on will be the person who gets to share them with you. Please send any review requests her way from now on. It’s been great working with you all – now, over to Sara…
I am so excited to be working on these titles and with you all! A few things you should know about me: Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret’s protagonist is my favorite character EVER and I love Baked Lays. On to Spring 2011:
A book I couldn’t put down is We All Fall Down: Living with Addiction by Nic Sheff (April 2011) a follow up to his New York Times bestseller, Tweak: Growing up on Methamphetamines. Nic continues to tell the incredible true story of his life as an addict, in and out of recovery. His story is no Go Ask Alice – it’s real and brutally honest, and his writing is flawless as he weaves the hilarious, the heartwarming, and the heartbreaking elements of his life together to tell this story.
Malinda Lo’s Ash was a blogger favorite. To follow this, she has written Huntress (April 2011) set in the same world, but featuring two seventeen year-old girls selected to go on a quest to restore the balance of nature in the Kingdom. Typical to Malinda, these characters kick butt and the writing is outstanding.
The legendary National Book Award winner Julie Anne Peters is back with a look at the ecstasy – and inevitable agony – of first love in She Loves You, She Loves You Not (June 2011). Seventeen year-old Alyssa is torn away from the life she knew, which included her girlfriend, when she is forced to move hundreds of miles away to live with a mother she barely knows. Julie’s writing has always been take-no-prisoners honest and brilliant, and this story is no exception.
Also, we have The Time-Traveling Fashionista by Bianca Turetsky (March 2011).
A debut novel which is the first in a new series, it tells the story of Louise Lambert who, via some vintage couture, finds herself transported back to 1912, where she becomes Alice Baxter, a beautiful silent film star traveling on the Titanic. It’s adventure with full-color fashion illustrations, a combination that I love.
Happy Smugglivus to all!
Leave a comment on this post saying which of these titles you are looking forward to reading and we will pick 3 winners who will receive Advanced Reading Copies of ALL 3 YA titles (Huntress, She Loves You, She Loves You Not and The Time-Traveling Fashionista). The contest is open to Canada and US ONLY (no PO Boxes please) and will run till Saturday 25th Dec 11:59pm (Pacific). Good luck!

I’m looking forward to She Loves You, She Loves You Not.
britDecember 18, 2010 at 5:21 am
I really liked Ash, so I am looking forward to Huntress. But I like the idea of time traveling to the early 1900’s, it seems like a new era for time travel books, so I look forward to reading The Time-Traveling Fashionista too.
AshleyDecember 18, 2010 at 5:27 am
I am most looking forward to Huntress – the cover is gorgeous! And I enjoyed Ash.

JohnDecember 18, 2010 at 7:04 am
Huntress is definitely one I’m interested in, although I still have to procure a copy of Ash! She Loves You, She Loves You Not also sounds REALLY good. It’s nice to see L&B publishing a lot of LGBTQ fiction.
Jennifer @ An Abundance of BooksDecember 18, 2010 at 7:14 am
These all sound great, but the Time-Traveling Fashionista sounds very different. It sounds like something my students might like, especially since the Titanic has been such a favorite topic at the school for awhile.
TinaDecember 18, 2010 at 7:32 am
Wow they all sound lovely! Huntress sounds like an interesting read and I love the cover.
SamanthaDecember 18, 2010 at 7:39 am
Is it a copout to say that all three sound interesting??? Although The Huntress’ cover is my favorite by far! Great contest!

Fangs, Wands and Fairy Dust
MerleDecember 18, 2010 at 10:23 am
I’m really looking forward to Huntress, since I liked Ash, but reading the summary for The Time Traveling Fashionista made me giggle in a good way. It sounds like a wonderfully fun book! So it would have to be between those two.

“She Loves You…” I like the idea of a gay character whose main story is not entirely about being gay
LauraDecember 18, 2010 at 11:25 am
The Huntress most definitely. I can’t wait for this to come out! 🙂
Steph SuDecember 18, 2010 at 12:09 pm
Are you kidding me? I’ve been looking forward to Huntress ever since I finished–and loved–Ash. Definitely that one! I’ve also been curious about Julie Anne Peters’ upcoming book, especially since I loved By the Time You Read This, I’ll Be Dead.

Everyone seems to be psyched for “Huntress,” and I’m no different! I’m also really interested in “She Loves You, She Loves You Not.”
CeilidhDecember 18, 2010 at 1:59 pm
Unfortunately this Brit cannot comment for the lovely prizes but I really cannot wait for Huntress to be released.
And very belated congratulations on the birth of your baby! In the bookshop I work in we have a finger-puppet book version of The Very Hungry Caterpillar which is basically the best thing ever.
Chelsea B.December 18, 2010 at 2:32 pm

Well, they all look pretty awesome in completely different ways. As for which one I am most looking forward to… probably “She Loves You, She Loves You Not” simply because I’ve really enjoyed her stuff in the past and am not really familiar with the writing in the other two…
BethieDecember 18, 2010 at 8:23 pm
I am really looking forward to reading Huntress.
April (Good Books & Wine)December 18, 2010 at 8:34 pm

Haley VDecember 18, 2010 at 10:22 pm
I would love to read Huntress!
Melanie LDecember 18, 2010 at 11:22 pm
They all look really good, but The Time-Traveling Fashionista is the one that catches my attention the most right now. I haven’t read a lot of books set in that time period. Also, the traveling on the Titanic part sounds really interesting!
SophieDecember 19, 2010 at 12:22 am
Usually, I’d be interested in The Time-Traveling Fashionista or rather, a setting that takes place in 1912, but Titanic sounds tragic. Being a fan of Juliet Marilier, I feel that Huntress would hold a much larger attraction for me.
Thanks always for introducing new gems for us all to read. Hope you ladies have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Make 2011 a Great Year, but don’t forget to rock the end of 2010. Cheers!
BrookeDecember 19, 2010 at 12:28 am
I’ve been looking forward to Huntress, and the other two books look great as well.
Thanks so much!
Ni8ht 0wlDecember 19, 2010 at 2:00 am
I am really looking forward to reading Huntress. And even if I don’t win this thing I will totally buy it! In fact, even with my hectic reading schedule (biology stuffs >.>) I will definitely find time to read this book. I’m really into these kick-ass women type of stories. ^-^ (I’m a Kate Daniels and Mercy Thompson fan) Plus, the cover of this book alone is enough to make me want to pick it up from the shelf.
Mrs. DeRapsDecember 19, 2010 at 8:20 am
I am looking forward to reading Nic Sheff’s new book, I read his first book and put it out on my classroom shelves for my students to read. It quickly disappeared and never returned, which I consider to be a promising sign that someone really connected with it.
I am also excited to read Malinda Lo’s new book. Ash is a huge hit among my freshman girls–They’ve been passing it around all year. She’s such a great writer for teen girls. Girls need writers like Lo who show teen characters who are strong and capable of making thier own decisions.
Thanks for the giveaway!

Hi! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any problems with hackers?
My last blog (wordpress) was hacked and I ended up losing a few months of hard work due to no back up.
Do you have any solutions to stop hackers?
