Over at Kirkus: Defy by Sara B. Larson

It’s Friday Monday, which means we’re over at Kirkus! Today Thea takes on her first big release of 2014 with a review of YA fantasy novel Defy by debut author Sara B. Larson.

Defy

Unfortunately, Defy is hardly defiant of crappy stereotypes (essentially, the book is a vehicle for a very poorly written love triangle). Go forth HERE and get the full review.

Sigh. When will the love triangle get out of my fantasy? I want war and magic and unexpected heroism, not brooding girls wondering if Mr. X is hotter and slightly less creepily controlling than Mr. Y.

Oh dear, this book. THIS book. It had so much potential to be awesometacular, and it wound up a limp sack of gender essentialist cliches.

When I’m reading about a Strong Female Warrior stereotype and I find myself counting how many time she cries or throws a pouty-fit, I know the book has achieved new and astonishing levels of Fail.
